Essay as a Literary Genre

The essay by George Orwell, Shooting an Elephant was a remarkable piece of writing. It had all the makings of a movie. I could just imagine the situation because it was so vividly pictured by Orwell. The story makes you think and decide if pride is more valuable than life itself. The idea of shooting an elephant just because the persona was supposed to seemed rather barbaric, but as usual, it is the societal pressures that gets the loudest say. Moreover, people always have expectations and expect the other party to live up to it. this only makes things more complicated as more and more of us are dictated by societal pressures to do or not do something, thereby denouncing our own value and beliefs.
